For anyone who has never read about Penny Eckert’s “Jocks and Burnouts” study, I highly recommend it. It illustrates the importance and usefulness of ethnographic methods in describing language practices. Eckert does a fantastic job at describing the details of talk, as well as other behavioral practices, found across different social communities.
